All is NOT as RANDOM as it Might Appear....

Seriously, there is a method to my madness...

Looking at this project, one might wonder....how does one even prepare for a quilt such as this?

I start by digging through my massive stash and then I cut a huge amount of strips....but really, I do have somewhat of a method.
After one quilts for a while, you start to realize what sizes of strips you have a tendency to use over and over again.

Here are my go to sizes:
  • Two and one half inch strips
  • Two inch strips
  • One and one quarter inch strips
  • Four and one half inch strips
My reasoning being, not only can they be used for piecing the blocks, but for binding, joining my Quilt As You Go blocks using either wide joining strips or narrow joining strips and for applique strips, as they are the right sizes.

Since so much of my work is improv I don't worry about cutting more strips than I need, which as you can see, there is no if, but, or maybe about it....I always cut more than I need, but I'll always find use for them.

  1. Thank you for disclosing those measurements. I was looking at my first QAYG quilt today and thinking it was time to make another one. I saw a handmade glass dish in a gallery today...beautiful turquoise and raspberry...and thought how great they would look as the focus colours. Now...what to put with them? Love all your work.

  5. I cut 2.5" strips since I can always use those for bindings, I also cut 5" squares since they work for a lot of my projects. I take time a couple times a year (need to now!) to cut and sort my scraps, it really helps to have them "ready to use".
Love your color and fabric choices, your work always inspires me!

  6. I have the most fun with my fabric when it is leftover from other projects. I get intimidated by yardage, thinking I'll need it for something else. thanks for sharing this.

  7. Do you use an Accuquilt or Sizzix cutter to cut strips? Am kind of addicted to mine. Your quilt is as all yours are magnificent!

  10. This quilt is looking really good. Can't wait to see the final version. I love that green with the turquoise and wouldn't ever have thought of putting them together. But they're stunning together (esp with the b&w).

  11. As I am basically lazy, I cut strips the same width as yours. That way I don't have to "figure anything out" as I'm going along. The cutting is done and that's it :)

I love this quilt and I bet Rachael will too!

  13. Thanks for sharing your cutting process. Just wondering . . . do you cut some of everything when you first buy or do you just pull fabrics and cut when starting something new?
